SERMA Ingénierie continues to work for the future of aeronautics with SMARTWISE.

This research project is part of the “Clean Sky 2” program, which aims to develop greener aviation technologies as quickly as possible.

Thanks to the combined expertise of the Swiss research institute CSEM, Imperial College London and SERMA Ingénierie, SMARTWISE has developed a platform of autonomous, miniaturised and energy-efficient wireless sensors dedicated to collecting data for structural health monitoring (SHM) systems on future multi-mission regional aircraft.

The benefits of this cutting-edge technology are various:

  • Reduce weight and energy consumption compared with conventional wired SHM systems.
  • Reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, while providing effective aircraft condition monitoring data.
  • The equipment’s wireless SHM capabilities will help reduce the costs of large-scale ground and flight testing, and enable predictive maintenance on regional aircraft where wired sensors would cause weight and installation problems.

As part of this project:

  • CSEM produced the electronic platform and the wireless communication system
  • Imperial College is in charge of energy extraction
  • SERMA Ingénierie developed the architecture of the platform, electronics, enclosures and test specifications.
